"Cartografia das Memórias Desobedientes": Experiência Museológica LGBTQIA+ em São Paulo

Abstract

This experience report is part of the research project “Cartography of Disobedient Memories,” developed in partnership with the Museum of Sexual Diversity (MDS) in São Paulo. The main objective was to reflect on memories linked to dissident sexualities, mapping indicators present in museums, collections, and heritage sites, as well as promoting exchange between students and professionals in the museum field. The methodology involved a technical visit carried out between July 29 and 31, 2025, when different cultural spaces in São Paulo were explored: MDS, Museum of Image and Sound (MIS-SP), Football Museum, MASP, and Banco do Brasil Cultural Center (CCBB). The analyses focused on expographic strategies, mediation and accessibility resources, observing how each institution addresses LGBTQIA+ issues. In addition, a practical preventive conservation activity was developed in the MDS technical reserve, allowing direct contact with collection preservation procedures. The main results point to significant advances in the incorporation of LGBTQIA+ memories in São Paulo museums, with an emphasis on valuing the history, culture, and struggles of the community. However, it was identified that the approaches vary in depth, with cases of superficial or isolated representations. The experience reinforced the importance of inclusive museum practices, capable of recognizing social contradictions and increasing the visibility of different experiences.
