SAFE SPACES OR POLITICAL SPACES? THE MICROPOLITICAL DIMENSION OF LGBTQIAPN+ ENVIRONMENTS

Abstract

This theoretical essay analyzes the micropolitical dimension of LGBTQIAPN+ environments, investigating the tension and complementarity between psychological support and political resistance. Drawing on the theoretical framework of Suely Rolnik, specifically her works Spheres of Insurrection and Micropolitics: Cartographies of Desire, it discusses how so-called "safe spaces" transcend their function as shelters to become laboratories for new modes of existence. The analysis begins with the historical contextualization of the Stonewall Riot, reclaiming it as an eruption of the "vibrant body" against the colonial-capitalistic capture of subjectivity. Structured into three axes, the text first explores psychological safety as a fertile ground for the decolonization of desire and the reconstruction of identities fragmented by violence. Next, it addresses the transition from support to everyday activism, where the space becomes a micro-territorialization of "unpimped" care practices. Finally, it examines the collective construction of narratives as a tool to combat hegemony and invisibility. The essay concludes that the effectiveness of these environments lies in the inseparability of care and politics, arguing that a space is only truly safe when it functions as a political device for the constant reinvention of existence, avoiding the trap of depoliticized welfare.
