TOWARDS A TRANSGRESSIVE EDUCATION: DISSIDENT BODIES AND THE FIGHT AGAINST INSTITUTIONAL TRANSPHOBIA

My experience in the TransUFBA collective at the Federal University of Bahia revealed, in a striking way, a central theme in our debates: the persistent obstacles to the access and retention of trans and travesti people in educational spaces. Based on this collective experience, I sought to analyze how institutional transphobia impacts the physical and psychological health of dissident bodies, increasingly distancing us from a complete educational trajectory—from basic to higher education—and confining us to a perverse cycle of low educational attainment and precarious insertion into the labor market, often restricted to informality. To this end, I employed an intersectional analysis—gender, race, and class—articulating contributions from trans and travesti people in their processes of resistance and struggle. I believe in the possibility of a (trans)gressive education to destabilize cisheteronormative hegemony and to advance the occupation of these spaces that are systematically denied to us.
